Our three panellists, John Tsagarelis, Grant Wang, Haitao Yu, and the moderator, Alfred Sum, are all leading portfolio managers with intense experience. Each panellist will answer questions focused on their role and use of technical analysis as part of the investment process at their respective firms. They will provide their precious experience in how to get into and excel in this industry. This is a good opportunity to glimpse into the daily life of these PM leaders and definitely a chance to make connections to the buy side world. Limited Seats.

GRANT WANG, CFA, Ph.D, Senior Vice-President, Head of Research, Highstreet Asset Management
As Head of Research at Highstreet Asset Management, Grant is responsible for leading the research team's initiatives required to develop and enhance Highstreet's quantitative investment strategies. He oversees the application of investment risk and return models to manage the firm’s equity and fixed income portfolios.
Prior to joining Highstreet in 2012, Grant spent 8 years as a portfolio manager and lead quantitative researcher at CPPIB. He constructed a global equity risk factor model to monitor and manage the tracking error of the fund’s global passive equity portfolio. His research on investment risk and alpha had been implemented in multi-billions global long short equity strategies.
Before his tenure with the pension funds, Grant has years’ experiences in developing predictive analytics in financial industry.
Grant is a CFA charter holder and earned a Ph.D in financial econometrics from Western University.
John Tsagarelis, Founder, Primes Corp.
Before starting his own long/short fund, Mr. Tsagarelis spent over 15 years managing global long only and long/short portfolios for Manulife Asset Management, CPP Investment Board and McLean Budden Ltd. While at CPPIB, Mr. Tsagarelis co-managed a global $3 billion long/short real return strategy that generated a return of 5.3% during the crash of 2008. While at McLean Budden and Manulife Asset Management portfolios he has managed have consistently ranked in the top quartile versus competitors. Mr. Tsagarelis has recently co-authored a paper, “Are Cash Flows Better Stock Return Predictors than Profits?“ wherein he outlines a series of cash-flow based stock return predictors that greatly outperform typical ROE and P/E ratios.
Mr. Tsagarelis graduated from Shulich School of Business at York University with both a BBA and an MBA. He holds an JD from the University of Ottawa and the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
Haitao Yu, Vice President, Head of Strategists, Liberty Harbor, Goldman Sachs Asset Management
As head of strategists for the GSAM Liberty Harbor Team, Haitao helps a team of investment professionals to manage a multi-billion hedge fund platform that is focused on Corporate Credit and Equity investments. Haitao is responsible for managing the quantitative analysis, risk management and reporting infrastructure, and helps the desk to optimize the risk profile for the portfolio under management.
Haitao graduated from California Institute of Technology with a B.A. in Physics, and Columbia University with M.A. in physics. He has been working in Goldman Sachs, Co since 2007.
ALFRED SUM, BASC, MASC, CFA, FRM
Mr. Sum is a Portfolio Manager on the team that manages Canadian and Global equity strategies. As a member of the portfolio management team, he assists in the design and implementation of the firm’s proprietary research. Prior to joining Hillsdale, Mr. Sum was an Investment Analyst at Cornerstone Capital Partners, Senior Analyst at TD Securities and Senior Risk Analyst at RBC Capital Markets. Mr. Sum has over 10-year experience in financial and quantitative analysis.
